"A Nightmare on Elm Street is the scariest film ever, according to a poll conducted by Yahoo! Entertainment.

The 1984 Wes Craven classic, which featured the monstrous Freddie Krueger stalking teenagers in their dreams, topped the list ahead of recent film Saw and the original 1974 version of The Texas Chainsaw Massacre.

'It seems it's the classics that still scare people the most,' stated Yahoo! Entertainment editor Jayne Cherrington. 'Modern slashers like Saw have more special effects and more violence, but if classic film character Freddy Krueger is still king of the scares, film studios may have to re-think what scares people,' she added.

The top ten in full:
1. A Nightmare on Elm Street
2. Saw
3. The Texas Chainsaw Massacre
4. Halloween
5. Candyman
6. Friday The 13th
7. Scream
8. Hostel
9. Child's Play
10. I Know What You Did Last Summer"
